Memorial Day Across the Border

Memorial Day is a great day to spend in Canada. While they go about business as usual, we can tour the towns crowd free. My family decided to try this day out when I found a geocache online that was hidden at the old Fort Mississagua on the golf course in Niagara-on-the-Lake. The Niagara-on-the-Lake golf course is the oldest North American course still running and we had to listen for "fore" as we headed through the course to the fort. Fort Mississauga was built in 1814 to replace Fort George, which had been destroyed by American forces. There is no entry into this tin can looking fort but just investigating the tunnel to the water and the brick building with tiny gated window holes was intriguing enough for us. We took some pictures in the doorways and on the top of the ramparts that are built into the earth and sat by the water for a bit before moving on to spend the day in town. We never did find the geocache because I forgot that we would be in another country and the charges to use the app would be a bit more than I wanted to pay.

We then spent some time in and out of the little shops along the main drag in town. We stopped to smell the flowers and take more pictures! We ate a delicious lunch in a very uncrowded restaurant, and had some yummy ice cream at Cow's Creamery. The kids burned off the ice cream at the playground and in the gardens at Simcoe Park to end the day. Niagara-on-the-Lake was a perfect way to spend a leisurely day off in our neighboring country, Canada. A weekend in Muskoka is targeted for a follow up trip.
